On August 23, director of Owgels group marketing department, Deng Xiaochong, human resource manager, Liu Xiaoqing, executor of Love Save Pneumoconiosis, Chen Xiaochun, pneumoconiosis expert of Guangdong Occupation Disease Prevention and Treatment Center, director Wu Ping and student volunteers got together to visit three pneumoconiosis patients in Guangdong Haizhu district.

Pneumoconiosis refers to a kind of systemic disease mainly in the way of diffuse pulmonary fibrosis caused by industrial dust and it is an occupational disease with the highest rates and most serious harm in China at present. Pneumoconiosis is an irreversible disease and no cure is found today for it.

Love Save Pneumoconiosis fund is the first public fund in China that is specializing in rescuing farmers with pneumoconiosis and working on promoting pneumoconiosis prevention. For 5 years, Love Save Pneumoconiosis cumulatively raised RMB 34,161,256.93 Yuan and helped more than 50 thousand farmers with pneumoconiosis in 28 provinces of China.

The three patients visited this time were once the main or quarry workers who developed pneumoconiosis because of the inhalation of amounts of dust. At present, the serious disease pulls them down. Some of them struggle to earn some living expenses by working as a cleaner, while others can only gasp and pant in the bed every day, breathing normally has become an unrealizable hope for them.

At present, a conservation number of pneumoconiosis patients in China is 6 million, and the group is in the difficult situation that both urban and rural medical assistances are not in place, because of heavy medical burden, a large number of farmers with pneumoconiosis are falling into or falling back to poverty and many patients are struggling at the dead-line. What the Owgels staff saw in their visit: 63-year-old uncle Zhang was a pneumoconiosis patient in Phase III, he lived in a 2 m2-to -3 m2-bungalow with a monthly rent of RMB 250 Yuan, the house was shady and moist, even healthy people could not breathe normally in it. Plastic bottles collected by uncle Zhang when he did cleaning were piled in a place near the bed and there were only the simplest furniture in the house. Living in hot and humid Guangzhou, uncle Zhang got through the summer only with an old fan. Seeing someone enter the house, uncle Zhang was somewhat embarrassed but glad, he said “thanks” repeatedly when received red packets from Owgels.

Based on sustained rescue and spread, more and more farmers with pneumoconiosis are rescued and their confidence of living are activated. However, the rescue work is still a long way to go and there are still many pneumoconiosis patients needing help.
